Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect from a therapy session?
At Beakon, you can expect a judgment-free and welcoming atmosphere. Here, you can share your thoughts and experiences with a trained professional who can guide you toward new, healthy coping skills and teach you how to approach difficult emotional situations with confidence.
How can I get the most out of therapy?
By attending each session, you are putting your mental health and self-improvement first. Your commitment and participation in this process along with an open mind will establish the foundation for the best long-term results. This way, you can obtain a new perspective and gain valuable insights in navigating life's difficult situations.
How is talking to you different from talking to my close friends or family?
At Beakon, we provide a safe and confidential environment backed by expertise and unbiased professionals who want only what is in your best interest. We believe in meeting you where you are to understand where you want to be while providing a clear path toward improvement with our support along the way.
How many sessions of therapy should I attend? How long does this process take?
Therapy is a journey of improving your mental health and varies depending on the person and their lived experiences. There is no definitive number of sessions or time that can determine when you are satisfied with your healing and growing process.
Why shouldn't I just take medication?
While medication is a valuable tool for treating some symptoms, it cannot attend to the root cause of emotional pain. Therapy considers symptoms when helping you change and adapt your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to relieve you of them, whilst equipping you with skills that encourage growth where medication cannot. When therapy is added with medication treatment, when needed, most individuals experience faster improvement than when taking medication alone.
What is confidentiality?
Confidentiality is a standard practice among mental health professionals and is in place to protect your information and support your efforts to be open and honest. It means your mental health professional cannot relay any information you provide them. Exceptions to this rule include; not being limited to: instances where you are believed to be a danger to your own or others' wellbeing, when information is subpoenaed under a court of law to aid legal proceedings, or for purposes of coordinating care or payment for services.
Why do I need a Pre-bariatric surgery assessment?
Undergoing a pre-bariatric assessment is required to meet the ASMBs (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) guidelines. It is used to determine whether you are psychologically fit for the changes that a bariatric surgery may cause in your life.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule an appointment?
Cancellations and rescheduling are always fine, so long as 24 hours of notice is given before the original appointment date and time. If notice is provided less than 24 hours in advance, you will be billed for the full appointment fee.
Does Beakon provide therapy during immigration processes?
Beakon does NOT provide or facilitate therapy services as part of any immigration evaluation process.

In the field of mental health, a dual relationship is a situation where multiple roles exist between a therapist and a client. The Code of Ethics of the NASW (National Association of Social Workers) requires that "social workers engaged in evaluation or research should be alert to and avoid conflicts of interest and dual relationships with participants."
